Online psychotherapy

Online psychotherapy has become much more popular/widespread in recent times due to restrictions related to the Covid pandemic. Many therapists have decided to continue online work. My experience and research show that it is equally effective as seeing someone in the office. In therapy, whether it’s face to face or online, a therapist will try to explore what you are going through and help you to become less troubled by your difficulties.

When/ Why do some people choose online counselling?

There is a lot of flexibility with online counselling. People may choose this method as it is easier for them to access it, or it fits better with their busy lifestyle or working hours. For some people it may be a personal preference, as they like to be in the comfort of their own home or for those who feel particularly anxious may find it easier to speak to a therapist online.

If you like the idea of having therapy online but feel ambivalent about it, you can always call me and we can talk about your concerns. Another way may be to give an online therapy a go, have a session or two, see how you feel and whether it is suitable and then decide if you would like to pursue it or not.

Things to consider when deciding to work online

You need to have a stable internet connection and a private space where you can talk freely and be uninterrupted by other people or mobile devices. Wearing headphones can provide more privacy and improve the sound quality.

Before each session it is good to have a few minutes break from what you were doing and gather your thoughts. Also, after each session it is good to have a few minutes to ground yourself before you go back to your daily routine. For example, you may want to do some breathing exercise or go for a walk. After seeing a therapist in person you would have your journey back home to reflect. In online counselling, however, you are in your own surrounding and you need that extra time after each session to help you transition from counselling to your routine.

Is online therapy for everyone?

No, it isn’t. It is not suitable for very serious mental illness, psychiatric disorder, or those who may pose a threat to themselves or others. In case of an emergency, it is best to contact your GP or Accident and Emergency Service.
